What Is Peak Property And Casualty Insurance And What Does It Cover?

Property and Casualty

Generally, casualty insurance is pooled with property insurance, and is often referred to as ‘property liability’ insurance or ‘property and casualty’ insurance.

Property insurance offers coverage for the business location while casualty insurance offers coverage for the business.

The main intention of this type of insurance is to protect the policy holder against financial losses that are caused due to accidents for which you are held legally liable.

For instance, you might be held legally liable if an accident occurs in your personal place, which in turn damages other’s property or belongings.

If you have already signed a property and casualty insurance, then the insurer will pay for the person’s injury and other legal costs you are responsible for, that occurred due to your negligence.

According to Marvin David, a policy holder of property and casualty insurance, the company denied to accept the claim that occurred due to natural calamity.

His business was on the 6th floor of a shopping complex. Due to flood, the first floor was wiped out. However, the 6th floor remained unharmed.

The company rejected the claim arguing that there was no direct loss to the business location and hence they denied to offer coverage for the loss in the business location.

Moreover, they suggested the policy holder that, had he signed for a business interruption or business continuation insurance, then they would offer coverage for the indirect loss for the business.

What does it cover?

Answer

Usually, casualty insurance covers both repairs and replacement of your or other person’s vehicle in the case of any fatal accident, in addition to medical bills.

Also, it offers coverage to other person’s belongings that are damaged due to your negligence. Some of the examples of coverage that a peak property and casualty insurance offers are:

Loss of wages

If someone is severely injured because of your negligence to such an extent that the person is incapable to work, due to which the wages have been stopped at work place then, you might be liable for the loss.

In such case, the casualty insurance covers the loss for the person.

Medical bills

If a person is suffering high medical bills in an attempt to treat the injuries caused by your negligence, then you might be liable to pay the medical bills.

In such a situation, you can approach casualty insurance to protect you.

Legal fees

If you are sued, you might need to hire an attorney to defend yourself. You can expect for a coverage by casualty insurance policy if someone has sued you for the loss of their property due to your negligence.

Pain and suffering

Usually, pain and suffering is another type of damage that people might claim when an accident occurs.

Apart from medical bills, you might be held liable for financial responsibility for the monetary equivalent of the sufferings caused due to pain.

What it doesn’t cover?

Answer

The latest field of insurance is introducing different kinds of insurance policies that can suit various scenarios of financial loss. Insurers are attracting people and coming forward to offer coverage for various types of losses. As per property and casualty insurance, the coverage for various scenarios are as follows:

Coverage for destruction due to floods

Generally, insurance policies do not cover floods. People who neglect the vision of damage caused due to floods might suffer serious losses if a flood occurs unfortunately.

If you are sure that you will not have any issues with floods then, you can normally continue with the present insurance policy, which might not cover the damages caused due to floods.

However, if you anticipate that floods might cause severe harm to your property, then you might need to go for a separate insurance to protect yourself from the risk of floods.

Government or political risk liability

If you do business at an international level or if most of your projects are based on government contracts then, you would benefit with this type of insurance coverage.

Sometimes, there might be change in rules and law in a country or government might withdraw the contracts without recourse.

This can cause a huge loss, which can be filled only through a specific insurance policy that covers these type of damages.

Loss occurred due to surety bonds

This type of casualty coverage is generally required when you act as a surety for a specific bond that informs about a contract between the other two people.

Generally, you might need to obtain a surety bond to insure your work if you are into construction or plan on bidding for government jobs.

Unfortunately, if you encounter problems that might lead to financial loss then, insurance that covers surety bonds can be your savior.

Dishonesty like employee theft

Sometimes, internal fraud actions can be done through employees or staff of the company.

Once of such activities is employee theft. You can anticipate this type of fraud if your employees handle cash transactions or have access to your company funds.

If you expect coverage for the loss caused due to employee theft, then the insurance companies require you to sign for a specific casualty insurance policy that offers coverage for these kind of fraud.

Coverage for damages caused due to terrorism

Traditional insurance policies do not cover damages caused due to war or terrorism. During the incident of September 11, 2001 attacks, the insurance claims exceeded $30 billion.

This caused a great burden for the insurance companies. Thus, the insurers now excluded the coverage for terrorism acts in their policies.

If you anticipate any terrorism act on your property, you need to specifically purchase a terrorism policy for the coverage.

Other types of coverage

Casualty insurance policies are available in various types, which appears to develop in the near future according to latest news. The types might include areas like cyber liability, cyber fraud, identity theft, employee theft etc.
